Mews houses are strongly embedded in British culture. They used to symbolise wealth and prominent position in society. They have real resurgence these days and many decide to either renovate existing properties or build a new stylised house. Mews houses typically feature traditional architectural elements like gabled roofs, red brick facades. The are contrasted with white window frames, and intricate stone detailing around doorways and windows. And that is exactly what we have built.
What does the house look like from the outside?
Building a house in Teddington we put a lot of effort into following the traditional style of the Mews. Although the primary use of the property will residential, we managed to keep design concepts of Georgian Mews. What immediately stands out is the traditional London brick that we used on the outside of the building. Together with red brick arches over the solid wood windows we achieved very convincing effect showing true quality workmanship. Another traditional element of the house is its roof. Not only its shape but also the fact that we covered it with traditional Welsh slate add to the overall effect. All the exterior walls and roof we nicely finished with black gutters and down pipes and gorgeous outdoor sconces. This adds a bit more industrial look to the property.

The architects also made sure that building a house in Teddington would at least to some degree mimic the original use of mews. Therefore, we installed large wooden double door and a rooftop terrace. Having a balcony or terrace served as separation from the ground floor commercial or equestrian activities. In a modern home on the other hand, it serves as a place of retreat and is an extension of a bedroom. This building project shows why you should entrust building your home to reliable builders like Rose Line.
Mews style house – how to create unique character?
While building a house in Teddington we wanted not only to mimic the Mews style but also to add a unique character. It was important to our clients to use natural materials that would add industrial characteristics. On the other hand, using materials like red brick or natural oak made the space very cosy and warm. The whole house is coherent in its design and build making it a perfect place to live. We used stunning carpentry specifically the new feature staircase and flooring. Also, all the door frames and doors we installed are made of oak wood and kept in the natural wood colour. And what is quite unique in this house, while all houses have white skirtings in this house, we installed natural oak ones. So, what gives this home its unique character? Here are some characteristics:
- Beautiful carpentry – from staircase, door frames and doors all made with the highest attention to detail.
- Stunning selection of ironmongery – from door handles and hinges to kitchen and bathroom hardware.
- Custom made kitchen – a cosy but very functional space with brand new appliances and stylised look.
- Two bathrooms. Similar in style, but different in function. One with a shower and two wash basins the other with a bathtub to meet the needs of whole family.
- A roof terrace – a nice addition in a densely build-up area.
- A coherent style both outside and inside the house.

Building a house in a difficult location.
Building a house in Teddington was a challenge. This three storeys, three-bedroom and two-bathroom family house is located at the top of a narrow, dead-end road. What is more, the road is densely build-up leaving no space for storage not to mention heavy duty machines. It also made this property development tricky to manoeuvre. Our dedicated team had to work in very cramped space while keeping all the safety measures. Another challenge we faced was project management. We needed to temporary block the driveways to neighbouring houses. It took high degree of diplomacy on behalf of our Project and Site Managers ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day site operations. Such developments truly require master builders who can collaborate closely with local community.

So how did we do? We have built a high-quality building with stylish rooms, high class carpentry and a unique look. Also, we succeeded in limiting the obstructions that the building project might have caused to the neighbourhood. We are immensely proud of the results with all the details involved. We can without a doubt say that building a house in Teddington was a pleasure and the result adds beauty to the area.
